Mirror and then Beauty.
Story the mirror has to tell.
Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish. -Sylvia Plath, Mirror
Mirror, a creation that has very much significance in our lives, it witnesses our lives, beginning from our childhood until our death and we never bother to think about it. Shouldn’t we? Let us dive into the ocean of emotions and feelings inside a woman and a mirror.
Let us start with a story:
Once there was a beautiful girl with charming looks. She was everyone’s favourite but you know who was her favourite, the one with whom whenever she meets, parts with an awesome smile on her face, he was her best companion, she loved him because he never lied to her, he never felt jealous of her and never ever let her down… He was MIRROR.
The girl was growing as fast as the moon approaches PURNIMA (a full-moon night), but with her growth, she was losing her love for the mirror, you know why because he still never lied to her!!! Now… daily the girl visits the mirror, searches for her reaches which drowned in the mirror, the girl now departs from the mirror with tears in her eyes and agitation of hands because the day after day, an old woman rises towards her telling her the inevitable truth of life, i.e, ageing. Depressed by the daily sights of once a gorgeous young girl turning into an old woman, she committed suicide…
This very sad story is actually the long story short of the poet Sylvia Plath with whose poem we started.
“There is nothing wrong with the love of Beauty. But Beauty - unless she is wed to something more meaningful - is always superficial.”
― Donna Tartt, The Secret History
Beauty, what do we understand by this term, I believe that it is the purest and most sacred word of our dictionary, and it remains so only if we understand it in the correct way, the beauty defines the purity of heart, but at the same time, I will not deny the love of outer body, because we are humans. And mind me, we have no right to label any creation of god as ugly or not beautiful, because sometimes, infact many a times our eyes fail to recognise what artistry god has poured on someone’s face but as Donna Tartt says above, “Unless beauty is wed to something more meaningful, it is always superficial.”
You know what, if something is meaningful, it is meaningful for eternity, it doesn’t lose its meaning with time, therefore, the real beauty is the beauty of the soul. The story you read was inspired by millions of suicides, the majority of which is done by woman daily because of the feeling that they no longer remained as attractive as they were in their youth. Coming to Know this fact, it became my moral responsibility to make you realize something you already know and just have forgotten in the chaaaoosss of this empty-from-inside glamorous world.
As the conclusion, I would love to request all of you, my dear readers, please focus on granules in life, superficiality has no deep roots, it will fade away with the tides of time, and what will remain is your heart and soul, so promise me, the next time you go to the mirror, you won’t care about what your facial looks are, because I know that all the people who are reading this, and also who are not, have their own beauties which they will soon recognise.
Please, in this world where the media and society constantly watering the inferiority complex among others, be a path lightner to yourself and to others in this journey called life…
Wish you all the best for the journey ahead, your opportunities do not have a camera.
